Nadi Pariksha is an ancient ayurvedic technique of diagnosing physical, mental and emotional imbalances through the pulse of the sufferer. This technique helps to get to the root cause of the disease and not just treat it according to the signs and symptoms that are being seen or felt. Great intellectuals, vaidyas and saints, like Sharangdhar Samhita, Shri Bhav Mishrji, Maharishi Kanada and many others, have contributed to the science of nadi. A person will find out about the things or activities that cause or may cause troubles to the body and can then, determine his/ her personal wellness regime with assistance from the health provider. It can range from therapeutic massages, personalized diet, rigorous detoxification and exercise programmes.
Leeching, the application of a living leech to the skin in order to initiate blood flow or deplete blood from a localized area of the body. Through the 19th century leeching was frequently practiced in Europe, Asia, and America to deplete the body of quantities of blood, in a manner similar to bloodletting.
‘Agni karma’, also known as ‘dahan karma’, is a process used in Ayurveda for various benign diseases that are characterised by pain or bleeding. In this process, the heated rods of gold, silver, iron, copper and pancha dhatu (five metals) are applied directly on the skin at the affected site. The temperature varies according to the process used and is lowest for gold and highest for silver. The ‘agni karma’ is not recommended for arbuda (tumour/malignancy). Here the authors present two cases of soft tissue sarcoma of lower extremity where ‘agni karma’ was tried in vain by traditional healers at their local village. Both the patients presented with progressive disease that was treated with wide excision and limb conservation, and the whole of the overlying skin scarred by previous healed burns of various degrees had to be sacrificed making a simple surgery difficult.
Viddhakarma: Also known as Vedhan is one of the eight Shastrakarma (surgical measures) mentioned in Sushrut Samhita. 24 This is a sterile procedure which includes piercing the points with special hollow needles considering the anatomy of Marma (vital points) as per Ayurve- da.
Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin with the application of heated cups. Its practice mainly occurs in Asia but also in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Cupping has been characterized as a pseudoscience and its practice as quackery.
